Reading and Music!

© What was your model of reading like before you read this slide show?
Reading, in my mind, is defined by reading at a good pace and being able to successfully answer comprehension questions after the reading is finished.

© What has changed or not changed about your model of reading now that you have read this slide show?
The part in the reading about the first chair violinist and the violinists in the back of the class changed my view on how reading should be taught but not really about my model of reading. It is true that the best are just going to get better and the worst will stay the same. This idea helps with classroom management, keep the kids that are struggling up front because you will naturally pay more attention to them. The gifted kids will be motivated enough to keep learning and improving from the back of the classroom.

© What are the implications of this model for your music classroom?
I will encourage students to make up their own music and explore their creativity. Then students could teach each other their own music so all of the students could explore other genres of music. I will then have students explain their songs and why they put certain emphasis on different parts. I will encourage open discussion about music and polite questioning about each other’s music.

Reading Strategy Comic Strip

A fun way for comprehension! Kids can read a book and then make a comic strip about it online for free!

Reading Comprehension Strategies

Somebody wanted....
But.....
So...
And then....
The teacher could easily make this a fun routine by the whole class saying the answers aloud or even writing on individual white boards!

I attached a picture of the "alphaboxes" chart that I created. I used two poster boards and "Llama Llama Red Pajama" for the feeling words:

CONFUSION!

Hi,
I am so confused! For the past 2.5 hours I have been trying to find free web apps and trying to download programs from open source and once the download is complete it doesn't work and I can't find anything that I don't have to download except the googledocs. Is it because i have an older mac?I'm lost! I did read the entire workshop on presentatios but haven't gotten any farther than that.
-Elise

Hi Elise,

Probably the older mac is a problem.  A lot of open source software runs on mac, but the newest versions may not.  Also, how comfortable are you with installing a program on your mac?  Are you doing the publishing workshop?  Let me know and I'll see if there is some troubleshooting I can do to make this work better for people with older macs.

Your email to me counts as your workshop for this week because you put in the time and sometimes things just don't work.  You did really well working with what must have been very frustrating--you didn't let frustration stop you.  You also made a wise choice about when to contact someone for some assistance.  Learning can take place in so many ways and it can happen in a very different way from what was intended.

I had a very poor teacher who taught me how NOT to teach, and as annoying as she was to deal with, what she has taught me has contributed significantly to my efforts to be the best teacher I can be.  Sometimes you go into a workshop with the intent of learning something but what you learn is that the workshop maker needs to provide some more support and instruction!!
